Why Kompas

We read more than ever, talk to AI all day, produce words by the thousand. And almost none of it is ours.

The feed scrolls past. The model answers, we nod, we close the tab. Nothing compounds — so we think the same thought again next week, from scratch.

Kompas is a correction. Every session becomes a node in your graph — never sold, never used by Kompas to train models. A private record of how you think.

Originality is not invention. It is recollection with intent.
The instrument

Your sessions become a graph.
Your graph becomes your writing.

You have circled this before — in session 009, you wrote that retrieval is the act of remembering you already chose.

You

Let’s reframe it — not what the answer is, but how the direction can move.

How it works

Four rooms. One instrument.

01

Capture

Documents, highlights, voice notes, web pages. Marked as yours before anything else touches them.

02

Session

Open a bearing and talk it through. Kompas asks better questions back — using your past notes, decisions, and reading.

03

Graph

Every session becomes nodes and edges — decisions, memories, retrieved passages. Today's thought brushes against yesterday's.

04

Write

Pull sessions into a page. Retrieved fragments sit in the margin. The voice is unmistakably yours.

Originality

Your words,
written back to you.

Kompas doesn't write for you. It writes with you — by remembering what you already wrote. The margin holds your own notes, old sessions, underlined passages, laid out next to the cursor so your hand can reach them.

100%Your data, yours. Free desktop stores everything in a local SQLite database; Pro adds a hosted graph for cross-device sync. JSON export on either tier.
0Training on user content. Ever.
OpenSource release planned under MIT after the first public release cycle.

Patience, when it is not a virtue.

I keep catching myself calling slowness a principle when it is really a fear. What I admire in patience is not what I am practicing.

Who Kompas is for

Built for people whose thoughts need continuity.

Essayists

For drafts that carry your argument, not the model's.

Researchers

For conversations you need to come back to — with the reading still next to them.

Founders

For decisions you've made before, and the reasons you made them.

PKM practitioners

For a graph that grows out of what you actually did, not what you meant to file.

Pricing

Honest, quiet pricing.

You own your graph on every tier.

Questions

Before you download.

01Does Kompas train on my sessions?+

Never. On the free desktop, your sessions, notes, and graph live in a SQLite file on your disk; the only network calls are to the LLM providers you choose to configure, under their own data policies. On Pro, your graph is hosted by Kompas to enable cross-device sync, but we still do not train on your content.

02How is this different from ChatGPT or Claude?+

Those are tools you talk to. Kompas is a place where your conversations, documents, and half-finished arguments live together — and surface themselves when today's thought brushes against something from last month.

03Which LLM does Kompas use?+

On Free (desktop): an OpenAI or Anthropic key powers AI features. OpenAI is required for realtime voice and transcription. You can also add Claude or ChatGPT subscriptions, or run local models via Ollama, optionally. On Pro (cloud, coming soon): frontier AI is included via Kompas Cloud — no personal key needed. Any BYOK keys you have saved go inactive while Pro is active and reactivate automatically if you cancel.

04Is the desktop app open source?+

Source release is planned under the MIT license once the public repo lands. Cloud-only code — billing, hosted models, and abuse detection — stays closed in a separate private repository. Watch for the GitHub launch announcement.

05What happens if I cancel Pro?+

Pro features keep working until the end of the current paid period, then the desktop falls back to a Free-like mode: any BYOK keys you had saved are reactivated, sync stops, and your local data stays intact. Your cloud-side graph is kept for a 30-day grace period — re-subscribe within that window and sync resumes from where it left off; export to JSON at any time before purge.

06Does Kompas have a web app?+

No — Kompas is always a desktop app. Pro adds cross-device sync and bundled frontier AI to the desktop binary, served by Kompas Cloud. The browser is only used for sign-up, account, and billing pages.

07Windows and Linux?+

The app is built on Tauri, so Windows and Linux builds are on the roadmap. macOS Apple Silicon is available today. Platform pages will be updated when builds are ready.

08Do I need an internet connection?+

On the free desktop, browsing and editing local data works offline; network is used when you call an LLM or use voice transcription, and Ollama lets even AI features run offline. On Pro, the bundled AI and cross-device sync need an internet connection — you can still read and edit locally while offline, but sync resumes when you reconnect.

09What does "included AI usage" on Pro actually mean?+

Pro includes a monthly pool for long-context sessions, transcription, and knowledge extraction — covering typical use without separate API charges. As you approach the limit, Kompas shows usage clearly before any optional top-up. We never silently charge you, and we never quietly swap to a cheaper model.

10Does Kompas Pro send my data to OpenAI or Anthropic?+

Yes. Pro routes AI requests through model providers, and your graph is stored in Kompas Cloud. Kompas does not train on your content. We will publish a detailed Pro data-handling policy before paid checkout launches.

11Can I self-host the Kompas Pro cloud?+

No. The hosted Pro cloud service is operated by Kompas and is not available for self-hosting. The desktop build is the self-managed option — it includes the same retrieval, sessions, writer, and graph, running entirely on your machine.
